Introduction

British artist Lucy Sparrow collaborated with Hema Supermarket to create a pop-up store that reimagined the everyday grocery shopping experience. Situated in a bustling public space, the installation transformed the essence of a typical Hema supermarket into a whimsical environment filled with hand-sewn felt versions of seafood, produce and fruits, etc. This colorful, tactile reinterpretation turned daily essentials into playful works of art, inviting visitors to experience groceries in an entirely new way. Guests could purchase the felt creations as souvenirs, gifts, or toys, allowing them to take home a piece of the unique art installation.

Challenges & Objectives

Hema aimed to connect with its young, family-focused customer base by offering an innovative experience beyond conventional grocery shopping. The collaboration sought to position Hema as a brand that combines practicality with cultural creativity, appealing to the next generation of shoppers. By integrating art into retail, the pop-up captured attention and generated excitement. The felt groceries, including familiar items like baozi, crabs, and bananas drew widespread interest and were quickly sold out, underscoring their strong appeal and the collaboration's effectiveness in engaging Hema’s target audience.
